How We Lit up a 1,000-Year-Old Pagoda (Without Touching It)
Case Study: Zero-Contact Lighting for Tianfeng Pagoda
Project: Tianfeng Pagoda Lighting Upgrade (Ningbo, China)
Challenge: Illuminate a 1,300-year-old heritage pagoda without any
physical contact or structural modification to the protected monument.
Solution (Non-Contact Lighting):
Instead of mounting fixtures directly on the tower, we implemented a
ground-based projection strategy.
• Ground-Level Precision: All LED floodlights and laser projectors were installed
in the surrounding plaza, carefully angled to avoid stressing delicate roof tiles and
wooden eaves.
• Dual-Mode Smart Control: The system features a "Daily Mode" for soft silhouette
washing and a "Festival Mode" that integrates dynamic laser mapping for cultural events,
all while maintaining a strict zero-drilling principle.
Value for Heritage Projects:
This case demonstrates how to achieve dramatic nightscapes for sensitive historical sites
through off-structure lighting design, ensuring full preservation compliance. Ideal for
European cathedrals or ancient monuments where "do no harm" is the top priority.
As a Ningbo-based lighting expert, I specialize in replicating this non-invasive approach
for global heritage sites.
